Northern Territories

The area became famous with the great Klondike Gold Rush in Canada’s Yukon Territory in the 1890s, and more recently the city of Yellowknife has become the centre of diamond production for Canada. Tourism in The North ranges from hiking, hunting, canoeing and fishing to experiencing Aboriginal cultures and wildlife in fabulous landscape and visitors in search of seeingthe Northern Lights.

Personally, l have just had a peek into this land myself - as a train-bus tour into the Gold Rush area of the Yukon, while on an Alaskan cruise, so other than that review in cruises, l have no further personal experiences in the Northern Territories.

Travel into the Canadian Yukon and the Great Klondike Gold Rush of 1898.!!!

One of the most popular shore excursions to book on any Alaskan Cruise is The White Pass & Yukon Route Railway for your port day in Skagway, Alaska. One of the most popular shore excursions to book on any Alaskan Cruise is The White Pass & Yukon Route Railway for your port day in Skagway, Alaska.

We booked directly with them instead of the cruise, and we took the bus up to Carcross, Yukon and joined the cruise passengers there, so that we ALL return on the SAME train. (No concern about missing the ship leaving without you)The difference, was that we had a small shuttle van with maybe 20 people instead of the large coach tour buses, that allowed us to make a couple of quick stops along the way, including seeing a Momma bear and her cubs.!! Also the train car for us was half full instead of the packed train cars for the reserved cruise excursions.(Note to those Americans travelling with us. The Yukon Territories is part of CANADA, so that is why you needed a passport for this excursion.

Dawson City's Sourtoe Cocktail with a Real Severed Human Toe.!!

Yukon local, Captain Dick Stevenson established the Sourtoe Cocktail Club in 1973 - the challenge was to take a shot of whiskey, (usually Yukon Jack) containing a mummified human toe.!
In what has become a time-honoured tradition in Dawson City, the club has over 100,000 members from all over the world. The most important rule: “You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow, but your lips have gotta touch the toe” - (but you can now choose any beverage).
(There have been 10 donated toes over the years - plus Captain Dick has now donated his OWN toes after his death in 2019)
