A wonderful travel moment for me was at La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires. Armed with my paper map to search for Evita’s tomb as well as the other spectacular grave sites, an older man approached. Expecting to be asked for a handout, l was pleasant enough, but actually he wanted to show me around... So l thought, why not, it may be worth it to have a private guided tour.
Guillermo spoke a little English and l spoke a few words of Spanish, and off we went. He spent the entire morning explaining about all the magnificent tombs of the Argentinian rich and famous, Eva Peron (Evita) and all the fabulous marble sculpture to rival works found in Rome. Speaking with lots of Spanglish, a terrific morning all in all. After the tour, l took my wallet out to pay, and Guillermo absolutely refused to take ANY money, it was obviously his pleasure to show a tourist the highlights.
As l walked away, l looked back to see him pick up his little broom and dustpan, and pin his name tag back on...
